Provenance
(n.) a record of ownership of a work of art or an antique, used as a guide to authenticity or quality.
It's key to be able to trace the location where an object was collected as well keep a record of who the previous owner or runner was and then the date of acquisition. While the rest of the Tribal Art world primarily place heavy emphasis on this, I always consider a particular piece in terms of form and style first and take provenance as a huge bonus instead. Although as a responsible collector, I guarantee provenance by ensuring all my pieces are labelled by Ifugao Municipality, specifying collected month & year as well as naming the runner and/or original owner whenever possible.
